Why North Shore Homeowners Are Making the Switch to Solar
BC Hydro rates have climbed steadily over the past decade — and they’re not expected to stop. For homeowners in North Vancouver and West Vancouver, solar energy isn’t just an environmental statement. It’s a practical, long-term decision that pays off on your monthly bill, your property value, and your peace of mind.
North Shore communities have always leaned into sustainability. Whether you’re in Lynn Valley, Deep Cove, Dundarave, or the British Properties, the values here are the same: quality, responsibility, and long-term thinking. Solar panel installation fits naturally into that mindset.
Why it makes financial sense:
- Offset your BC Hydro bill with electricity you generate yourself
- Earn credits through BC Hydro's net metering program by sending excess power back to the grid
- Increase your home's resale value — solar homes consistently attract stronger offers
- Government rebates and incentives may be available to reduce your upfront costs (our team will walk you through current programs)
- Energy savings compound over the lifespan of the system — often 25+ years
And yes — solar works in Vancouver’s climate.
We hear this concern often. The good news: solar panels don’t need direct sunshine to generate power. They work on diffuse light, which means even on our grey November days, your system is producing energy. Modern panels are engineered for northern latitudes, and our assessments account for your specific roof orientation, pitch, and any shading from trees — a detail that matters a lot on a forested North Shore lot.
The Only North Shore Installer Who Thinks Like a Roofer First
Most solar companies send an electrician and a crew. They mount panels, connect wiring, and move on. What they often miss — and what creates problems years later — is the roof itself.
Penetrations. Flashing details. Waterproofing. Roof age. Underlayment condition. Structural load.
These aren’t afterthoughts. They’re the difference between a solar system that performs for 25+ years and one that causes a costly leak six months after installation.
Eco Exteriors is different. We’re a CertainTeed ShingleMaster Roofing Contractor and a Certified Pro Contractor through Malarkey — with 18 years of hands-on roofing experience on the North Shore. We evaluate your roof before a single panel is touched.
What that means for you:
- We identify whether your roof can support the system — or whether a replacement makes more sense first (we'll always tell you honestly)
- We handle all roof penetrations with the same precision as a full roofing project
- Flashing is installed to roofing standards, not just solar standards
- Your roof warranty and your solar warranty remain intact
- One trusted crew. One point of accountability. No gaps between trades.
If you’re considering solar on a roof that’s 10+ years old, this matters more than almost any other factor.
What Our Solar Panel Installation Includes
Roof-Mounted Solar Panel Systems
The most efficient and cost-effective solar setup for residential homes. Panels are mounted directly to your roof using a low-profile racking system, optimized for your roof’s pitch and orientation. We assess south and west-facing surfaces for maximum sun exposure across North Shore conditions.
Battery-Ready Solar Systems
We design systems with battery storage in mind — whether you want to add storage now or in the future. Energy storage allows you to use your own generated power during evenings or outages, reducing your reliance on the grid even further.
Solar-Ready Roofing Systems
Planning a roof replacement and thinking about solar in the next few years? We can install your new roof with solar integration in mind — proper structural reinforcement, pre-planned penetration points, and compatible underlayment. Smart sequencing saves money.
Custom Solar Assessments for Complex Roofs
North Van and West Van homes aren’t cookie-cutter. Many are hillside, steep-pitch, multi-level, or heavily tree-shaded. Our team has the roofing expertise to assess challenging structures and design solar solutions that work with your home — not against it.
Types of Solar Panel Systems We Install
Grid-Tied Systems
The most common setup for North Shore homes. Your panels generate power, you use what you need, and any surplus goes back to BC Hydro through net metering — earning you bill credits. Straightforward, reliable, and the fastest return on investment.
Battery Storage Systems
Add a battery bank to store your generated energy for evenings, cloudy periods, or grid outages. Increasingly popular with West Vancouver homeowners who want energy resilience alongside savings.
Solar-Integrated Roofing
If you’re replacing your roof anyway, we can design your new roofing system with solar integration built in from the start. Clean, purposeful, and no redundant work.
Low-Profile Panel Mounting
For heritage homes or design-forward properties where aesthetics matter, we use low-profile mounting systems that keep your roofline clean without sacrificing production.
How Our Solar Panel Installation Works
We keep it clear and straightforward — no surprises.
Step 1 — Free Consultation
We talk through your energy goals, current BC Hydro usage, and what you're hoping to achieve. No pressure. Just honest information.

We assess your roof's orientation, pitch, shading from trees or neighbouring structures, and available surface area. We calculate your expected energy production based on your specific property.
Step 4 — System Design & Recommendations
We present a clear, customized system recommendation — panel count, placement, expected output, and cost. No generic quotes. No upsells you don't need.
Step 5 — Installation
Our certified crew handles everything: panel mounting, roof penetrations, flashing, wiring, and inverter installation — all to roofing and electrical standards.
Step 6 — Cleanup & Inspection
We leave your property clean and conduct a full post-installation inspection before we consider the job done.
Step 7 — System Walkthrough
We walk you through your new system — how to read your monitoring data, what to expect seasonally, and how to get the most from your investment.

What Our Customers Say About Us
We've completed solar projects across North Vancouver, West Vancouver, and Vancouver. Here's what our customers say.
Fast, responsive and very helpful.
James
Wholeheartedly recommend working with them if you need roofing work.
1. If I was told this, I would have looked at the weather before making the appointment. 2. I called two other roofing companies and both showed up had no problem going on the roof in the rain.
He gets two stars because he actually called to cancel. (The bar is set low with trades these days.)
The affect a new roof has on the curb appeal of your house is enormous, not to mention the comfort you gain knowing that everything is watertight for the oncoming winter - you need the installation done right. Doug, Rada and team were awesome from beginning to end - from clear details of what was being installed in the quote to how they protected the rest of the house and deck during demolition and installation - they went the extra mile.
They easily dealt with some curveballs we threw to them too. They removed our leaky (and now unused) chimneys above the roofline, giving the home a much cleaner look and installed snow guards.
Doug took time to work through a water egress issue that was not related to the roof installation - including helping me cut drywall open! - determined to find a solution the issue. Which we did.
We also required some more specialized carpentry work. Doug leveraged his own network to get us somebody to complete it.
It's not easy to find a company that that you can trust with such competitive pricing and such high quality craftsmanship on such a project. I feel fortunate to have worked with Doug, Rada and the team at Eco Exteriors.
The metal roof has really given the home a transformative look. And the new gutters were really the cherry on top. My photographs attached don't truly show how transformative it is.
A great team and great company!

Solar Questions — Answered Honestly
Residential solar installations on the North Shore typically range from $15,000 to $35,000 depending on system size, roof complexity, and whether battery storage is included. Most homeowners offset a significant portion through energy savings, net metering credits, and available government rebates. We provide detailed, itemized quotes — no estimates with hidden add-ons later.
Several things influence the final number: the size of the system you need based on your BC Hydro usage, your roof’s pitch and complexity, how many panels can be positioned for optimal sun exposure, whether your roof needs any prep work beforehand, and whether you’re adding battery storage. Shading from trees — common on North Shore lots — can also affect how many panels are practical. We assess all of this before quoting.
Yes — and they can be meaningful. BC Hydro’s net metering program lets you earn bill credits for excess energy sent back to the grid. Federal and provincial programs may offer up to $10,000 toward residential solar and battery systems, depending on eligibility. We walk every homeowner through what’s currently available during the consultation. Incentives change, so we always confirm the details at the time of your assessment rather than quoting figures that may be outdated.
For most North Shore homeowners, yes — especially with BC Hydro rates continuing to rise. Modern panels generate power on diffuse light, not just direct sunshine, so overcast winters don’t eliminate production the way many people assume. When you factor in energy savings, net metering credits, potential rebates, and the increase to your home’s resale value, most systems reach payback within 8 to 12 years — with 15 or more years of savings still ahead.
It depends on your current usage, system size, and roof orientation. That said, many North Shore homeowners reduce their monthly BC Hydro costs by 50% or more. Homes with larger energy footprints — electric heating, EV charging, hot tubs — often see the strongest financial return because there’s more consumption to offset. We calculate a production estimate based on your specific property before recommending a system size.
Battery storage typically adds $8,000 to $15,000 to the project, depending on capacity. Whether it’s worth it depends on your priorities. If reducing your BC Hydro bill is the main goal, a grid-tied system without storage usually delivers the strongest return. If backup power during outages or greater energy independence matters to you, storage is worth serious consideration. We’ll help you think it through honestly — not push you toward the higher-cost option by default.
If your roof isn’t in the right condition for solar — whether due to age, damage, or flashing concerns — we’ll tell you clearly before the project begins. Addressing roofing issues first is always more cost-effective than removing and reinstalling panels later when the roof eventually needs replacing. Because we’re certified roofing contractors as well as solar installers, we can sequence both projects efficiently and provide a combined quote.
Think of solar as paying your electricity bill in advance — at a fixed rate, with no future increases. BC Hydro rates have risen consistently and are expected to continue doing so. A solar system locks in your cost of energy for the next 25+ years. Over that span, the cumulative savings typically far outpace the upfront installation cost, making it one of the stronger long-term home investments available to BC homeowners.
Home size is one factor, but your actual electricity consumption matters more. A smaller home with electric heating and an EV charger may need a larger system than a bigger home that’s primarily gas-heated. We base our system sizing on your BC Hydro bills — specifically your kilowatt-hour usage — rather than square footage alone. That gives you a system matched to your real needs, not an oversized one you don’t need.
Financing options may be available depending on your situation, and some homeowners use home equity to fund solar projects given the long-term return. The federal and provincial rebate programs can also reduce the net amount you need to finance from the start. We’ll walk you through the full picture during your consultation — what the system costs, what rebates may apply, and what financing options are worth exploring — so you can make a clear-headed decision.
