Professional Cedar Roofing in West Vancouver
West Vancouver’s combination of heavy rainfall, salt-laden air, and steep, forested lots makes cedar roofing both a natural fit and a material that demands skilled installation. Our team builds every cedar roof around proper ventilation, drainage, and breathability so it performs the way premium cedar is meant to.
Cedar Roofing Built for the North Shore Climate
West Vancouver sees some of the heaviest rainfall in the Lower Mainland, plus coastal humidity that accelerates moss and moisture issues if a cedar roof isn’t ventilated correctly. We install breathable underlayment systems and proper airflow paths so cedar can dry between rain events instead of trapping moisture against the wood.
A Premium Roofing Choice for West Vancouver Homes
Cedar remains one of the most sought-after roofing materials for West Vancouver’s high-end residential market, prized for its natural texture and architectural pedigree. It pairs naturally with the West Coast Modern and Tudor-influenced homes common throughout British Properties, Chartwell, and Altamont.
Long-Term Beauty and Performance
A properly installed and maintained cedar roof in West Vancouver typically performs for 25 to 40 years, weathering to that signature silver-grey patina homeowners specifically request. Performance depends heavily on grade, ventilation, and ongoing care — which is why we’re transparent about maintenance from day one.
Why Homeowners Choose Cedar Roofing
Homeowners in West Vancouver choose cedar for reasons that go beyond appearance — it’s a material that fits the architecture, the climate, and the long-term value expectations of the neighborhood. Here’s what consistently drives the decision.
Natural Beauty and Character
No two cedar roofs weather exactly alike, giving each home a distinctive, organic texture that manufactured products can’t fully replicate. The natural grain and tonal variation of Western Red Cedar are a major reason it remains the material of choice on premium North Shore properties.
Strong Insulation Properties
Cedar’s natural cellular structure gives it better insulating value than asphalt or metal, helping moderate attic temperatures through both West Vancouver’s damp winters and warmer summer months. Homeowners often notice more stable indoor temperatures after switching from older, thinner roofing materials.
Sustainable Roofing Material
Western Red Cedar is a renewable, biodegradable material, and when sourced and installed correctly it’s one of the more environmentally responsible premium roofing options available. This aligns with the eco-conscious approach many West Vancouver homeowners already bring to their property.
Timeless Architectural Appeal
Cedar shake and shingle roofing has anchored West Coast residential design for decades, and it continues to suit everything from heritage-style homes to contemporary architectural builds. It’s one of the few roofing materials that reads as premium in both traditional and modern settings.
Cedar Roofing Systems We Install
We install the full range of cedar roofing systems, matched to your home's architecture, slope, and exposure. Material grade and installation method both directly affect how your roof performs over its lifespan.
Cedar Shake Roofing
Hand-split cedar shakes offer a thicker, more rustic, heavily textured profile that suits hillside and estate-style homes throughout West Vancouver. Because shakes are thicker than shingles, they carry a higher material and labour cost but deliver a bolder architectural statement.
Cedar Shingle Roofing
Sawn cedar shingles provide a more uniform, refined appearance, often chosen for cleaner architectural lines or heritage-style homes in Dundarave and Ambleside. They’re thinner than shakes, which makes them a strong option where a more tailored look is the priority.
Western Red Cedar Roofing
We install #1 Grade (Blue Label) Western Red Cedar, prized for its natural oils that resist decay, insects, and the moisture West Vancouver’s climate delivers year-round. This is the same grade specified on premium coastal homes throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Premium Cedar Roof Replacements
When an aging cedar roof has reached the end of its lifespan, we manage the full replacement — tear-off, deck inspection, underlayment upgrade, and new cedar installation — start to finish. Many West Vancouver homeowners also use a replacement as the opportunity to upgrade ventilation or correct long-standing moisture issues.
Built for West Vancouver Homes
West Vancouver’s housing stock isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is our approach to cedar roofing here. We tailor material grade, fastening, and ventilation strategy to the specific demands of waterfront, hillside, and custom estate properties.
Waterfront Properties
Homes along the waterfront in Eagle Harbour and Horseshoe Bay face near-constant salt air exposure, which accelerates corrosion on fasteners and flashing if the wrong materials are used. We use corrosion-resistant stainless steel or copper fastening systems on every coastal cedar installation to protect against this.
Hillside Homes
Elevated, forested lots throughout the British Properties and Chartwell often mean steeper pitches, heavier tree canopy, and shaded roof sections that stay damp longer after rain. These properties need precise ventilation planning and proactive moss management built into the install, not added later.
Luxury Estates
Large-footprint estate homes often involve multiple rooflines, dormers, and architectural details that require significantly more layout planning and skilled labour. We treat these as custom projects, not standard installs, with material selection and crew scheduling built around the home’s specific architecture.
Custom Architectural Homes
West Vancouver’s custom-built homes frequently mix cedar with metal, skylights, or flat roof sections in a single design. We coordinate cedar installation with these adjoining systems so flashing, transitions, and waterproofing all perform as one integrated roof.
Benefits of Cedar Roofing
Beyond its appearance, cedar delivers practical performance advantages that matter in West Vancouver’s specific climate and property values. Here’s what homeowners gain with a properly installed cedar roof.
Natural Weather Resistance
Western Red Cedar’s natural oils provide inherent resistance to moisture, decay, and insect damage, which matters in a climate that sees over 1,500mm of annual rainfall along the North Shore. This natural resistance is why cedar has remained a trusted material here for generations, provided it’s properly ventilated.
Improved Energy Efficiency
Cedar’s natural insulating properties can help reduce the temperature swings that drive heating and cooling costs, particularly in homes with older, thinner roofing underneath. Many homeowners notice a more stable indoor temperature after a cedar roof replacement.
Distinctive Curb Appeal
A well-installed cedar roof is one of the fastest ways to elevate a home’s street presence, particularly on the architectural styles common throughout West Vancouver. It’s a material buyers and appraisers recognize immediately as a premium choice.
Long-Term Investment Value
Cedar roofing is consistently associated with stronger resale positioning on premium North Shore properties, where buyers expect high-end exterior finishes. A well-documented, professionally maintained cedar roof can be a meaningful selling point in West Vancouver’s luxury market.
Why Homeowners Choose Eco Exteriors
Eco Exteriors has worked on the North Shore since 2008, and cedar roofing in West Vancouver’s demanding coastal climate requires more than general roofing experience. Here’s what homeowners can expect when they work with us.
Experienced Cedar Roofing Specialists
Founder Douglas Jackson is a North Shore native, and our team has installed and repaired cedar roofing across West Vancouver's full range of property types for over 18 years. That local experience means we already understand how each neighborhood's exposure and architecture affects a cedar roof's performance.
Premium Material Selection
We work exclusively with #1 Grade Western Red Cedar and source from suppliers who meet the standards required for premium coastal installations. Material grade is the single biggest factor in how long a cedar roof lasts, and we don't cut corners here.
Transparent Communication
We tell homeowners exactly what cedar requires — including the maintenance commitment — before they sign a contract, not after. That honesty matters more on a $40,000+ investment than it does on a basic asphalt re-roof.
Workmanship You Can Trust
Eco Exteriors is a CertainTeed ShingleMaster and Malarkey Certified Pro contractor, Google Guaranteed, rated 9.9/10 on HomeStars, and BBB A+ accredited. We back our installations with manufacturer-backed workmanship warranties and our own certified-installer standards.
Our Cedar Roofing Process
Every cedar roofing project follows the same structured process, whether it’s a hillside repair or a full estate-home replacement. This consistency is how we protect both the homeowner’s investment and our own workmanship standards.
Roof Inspection
We start with a full on-site inspection to assess the existing cedar's condition, deck integrity, and ventilation, identifying exactly what's driving any current issues. This determines whether repair, partial replacement, or full replacement is the right call.
Material Selection
We walk homeowners through grade, shake vs. shingle profile, and finish options based on the home's architecture and budget. For West Vancouver's premium properties, this often includes discussing #1 Grade options and any architectural matching requirements.
Installation
Our crews install cedar with proper interleaving, fastening, and ventilation detailing specific to West Vancouver's rain and salt-air exposure. We coordinate closely on multi-system homes where cedar meets metal, skylights, or flat roof transitions.
Final Walkthrough
Once installation is complete, we walk the finished roof with the homeowner, review the warranty documentation, and confirm maintenance expectations going forward. Nothing about the project should be a surprise by this point.
What Our Customers Say About Us
We've completed cedar roofing projects across West Vancouver. Here's what our customers say.
We chose to go with a metal roof, and I couldn’t be happier with the quality of work and the final results. The craftsmanship is top-notch, and it truly enhances the look of our home. Thank you, thank you!
Fast, responsive and very helpful.
James
Wholeheartedly recommend working with them if you need roofing work.
1. If I was told this, I would have looked at the weather before making the appointment. 2. I called two other roofing companies and both showed up had no problem going on the roof in the rain.
He gets two stars because he actually called to cancel. (The bar is set low with trades these days.)
The affect a new roof has on the curb appeal of your house is enormous, not to mention the comfort you gain knowing that everything is watertight for the oncoming winter - you need the installation done right. Doug, Rada and team were awesome from beginning to end - from clear details of what was being installed in the quote to how they protected the rest of the house and deck during demolition and installation - they went the extra mile.
They easily dealt with some curveballs we threw to them too. They removed our leaky (and now unused) chimneys above the roofline, giving the home a much cleaner look and installed snow guards.
Doug took time to work through a water egress issue that was not related to the roof installation - including helping me cut drywall open! - determined to find a solution the issue. Which we did.
We also required some more specialized carpentry work. Doug leveraged his own network to get us somebody to complete it.
It's not easy to find a company that that you can trust with such competitive pricing and such high quality craftsmanship on such a project. I feel fortunate to have worked with Doug, Rada and the team at Eco Exteriors.
The metal roof has really given the home a transformative look. And the new gutters were really the cherry on top. My photographs attached don't truly show how transformative it is.
A great team and great company!

Cedar Roofing Questions — Answered Honestly
Cedar roof replacement in West Vancouver typically ranges from $45,000 to $80,000 installed for a standard-sized home, with larger estate properties or steep, complex rooflines reaching $80,000 to $150,000+. The wider range compared to North Vancouver reflects West Vancouver’s larger home footprints, steeper hillside lots, and more architecturally complex rooflines. Call 604-985-4326 for a free, no-obligation estimate based on your specific property.
Cedar costs more because it’s a premium natural material requiring more labour-intensive installation, with each shake or shingle individually placed and interleaved with felt. Asphalt shingle replacement in West Vancouver typically runs $9,000–$18,000, compared to $45,000–$80,000+ for cedar. The difference reflects material cost, installation time, and the skilled labour cedar requires.
The biggest cost factors are roof size, pitch, material grade, and the number of dormers, valleys, or penetrations the roofline includes. West Vancouver’s steep, multi-level estate homes — common in British Properties and Chartwell — push costs higher due to the specialized labour and safety equipment steep pitches require. Material grade (shingles vs. shakes, standard vs. premium) is the second-largest factor.
For most West Vancouver homeowners, yes — cedar delivers architectural value, strong resale positioning in the luxury market, and a 25- to 40-year lifespan when properly maintained. The upfront cost is significant, and we’re upfront that cedar requires more ongoing maintenance than asphalt or metal. Whether it’s “worth it” depends on whether you value that architectural character enough to commit to the maintenance.
Cedar shakes generally cost more than cedar shingles because they’re thicker, split rather than sawn, and require more material per square foot of coverage. On a typical West Vancouver home, that difference can add several thousand dollars to the total project cost. Shingles offer a more refined, uniform look at a comparatively lower price point.
Cedar roofing is widely recognized as a premium exterior finish in West Vancouver’s luxury real estate market, and a well-maintained cedar roof is often viewed favourably by buyers and appraisers. It won’t single-handedly drive a sale, but on a high-end property, a deteriorating or poorly maintained cedar roof can actively hurt a listing — so condition matters as much as the material itself.
Routine cedar maintenance — including cleaning, moss treatment, and protective re-treatment every 2–3 years — typically runs a few hundred to a couple thousand dollars per visit, depending on roof size and access. Budgeting for this ongoing care is essential to reaching cedar’s full 25- to 40-year lifespan, especially in West Vancouver’s wet, moss-prone microclimates.
Beyond the installation cost, expect to budget for periodic cleaning, moss treatment, and protective re-treatment every few years to protect your investment. Over a 30-year lifespan, that ongoing maintenance is a meaningful but predictable cost — and it’s significantly less than the cost of premature replacement from neglect.
Western Red Cedar’s natural oils provide superior resistance to decay and insects compared to lower grades or other wood species, which matters significantly in West Vancouver’s wet, coastal climate. For a premium property where longevity and appearance both matter, the additional cost of proper-grade Western Red Cedar is generally a sound investment rather than an upsell.
Cedar and premium standing seam metal roofing land in a similar upper price tier, though metal typically lasts longer — 40 to 70 years versus cedar’s 25 to 40 — with significantly less ongoing maintenance. The choice often comes down to architectural preference: metal for low-maintenance, long-term performance, or cedar for natural texture and traditional West Coast character. We install both and can walk you through which fits your home.
